Immigrant entrepreneurs are linked with private sector investors in Canada who will help establish their start-up business. Private-sector investors can be divided into three types: angel investor, venture capital fund, and business incubator.

 

Initially, the program was a three-year pilot, the program was made permanent on March 31, 2018.

 

Under the Start-Up Visa Program, Canada accepts a wide range of business concepts to mention a few A.I. based concepts, On cloud applications, agriculture, skincare, farm technology, skull cranial stabilization technology, and similar other concepts.

 

Candidates can initially come to Canada on a work permit (closed) supported by their designated Canada-based investor i.e. Designated Entity/ Designated Organization, before qualifying for permanent residence once their business is up and running.

Qualification Criteria’s:

There are four requirements you need to meet in order to qualify for a Canadian start-up visa under the Canada’s Start-Up Visa Program:

 

1. Have a qualifying business:

▪ You must hold at least 10% of the voting rights attached to all shares of the company.

▪ Together with the designated organization/designated entity, the Founder(s) must hold at least 50% of the voting rights attached to all shares of the company (i.e. Canadian Startup)

 

2. Have a letter of support from a designated organization/designated entity:

▪ The Founder(s) need to demonstrate that they have the support of a;

(a) Business Incubator;

(b) Venture capital fund; or

(c) Angel investor group

▪ In order to do this, you must pitch your innovative business idea and convince the organization that it is worth supporting.

▪ The process of pitching your business idea will be different for each organization.

▪ If your pitch is successful, you will receive a confirmation of support from the respective designated organization/designated entity, namely “Letter of Support”. The Letter of Support forms an integral part of the start-up visa application for the purposes of immigration.

 

3. Meet the language requirements:

You must take a language test from an approved agency and show that you meet the minimum level of the Canadian Language Benchmark (CLB) 5 in either English or French in speaking, reading, listening, and writing.

 

4. Proof of funds:

You need to show that you have enough money to support yourself and any dependents once you arrive in Canada. The amount you need depends on the size of your family.

It takes about 3-4 months, tentatively, to secure a commitment certificate/letter of support from a designated entity. Upon letter of support is received, the application for permanent residence can be submitted - it takes approximately 12-16-months to finalize the application for visa issuance for PR.
